Bring mindfulness to your weight-loss efforts

Do you have a love-hate relationship with your body image? Do you “live to eat” rather than “eat to live”? Are you disgusted with your lack of willpower to avoid the foods you know will put on the weight, mess with your energy levels and provide less than optimal nutrition?

Most of us know what we should be eating, and that generally doesn’t change no matter how heavy or skinny we are: lean meats and fish and vegetable protein, deeply colored vegetables, fruits, grains in their least processed form, moderate amounts of healthy fats. Have an exercise problem? Solve it!

Stop trying to convince yourself not to exercise! Whether it is that we are too tired or we do not have time, people are always trying to find an excuse to not exercise. This summer, make a change!  Here PBS along with Next Avenue suggests what to do when hectic schedules, aches and missed meals threaten to disrupt your exercise routine.

1. You are about to work out when you realize that you haven’t eaten all day. Should you not work out?

No excuse! Just have a quick snack and go work out! Amy Goodson, a board-certified specialist in sport dietetics, suggests having a quick snack (but making sure it’s the right one). Your goal is to consume enough carbohydrates to sustain energy and enough protein to maintain blood sugar levels. Here are some good options:

  • 1 slice of whole wheat bread with 1 tablespoon of peanut butter
  • 1 banana or apple with 1 tablespoon of peanut butter
  • 15 whole-grain crackers and 1 string of cheese
  • A whole grain granola bar, plus 10 to 15 almonds

2.  Your heart-rate monitor shows up higher-than-normal during your work out. You should just stop. Right?

It depends. An elevated heart rate can occur for a variety of reasons, says exercise physiologist Irv Rubenstein. Dehydration, overtraining, a medical condition affecting the heart rhythm, certain prescription drugs or stresses completely unrelated to your work out can produce a spike. What should be done depends on the cause of the spike. Emotional stress should never be a reason to stop working out.  In fact, emotional stress should be a reason to continue working out because exercising helps relieve stress. Dehydration can be resolved by cooling down for 10 minutes and drinking a cup or two of water and then going back to the work out.

Irv Rubenstein says that if the heart rate stays elevated for an unusually long period of time and you can feel the pounding in your chest, stop immediately and call your physician. If you are experiencing alarming symptoms like excessive sweating or tightness in the chest, jaw or arm, get to the emergency room as soon as possible.

3.  Your knee starts to twinge during your exercise routine. It’s not preventing you from exercising but should cut your routine short. Or should you?
Just listen to your body. You should be familiarized with the normal strain of a work out. However, if you feel a sudden twinge in the knee, take it as a signal that something may not be right. You should not stop your work out, but be aware of the twinge. When the feeling is accompanied by a sense of the knee “giving out”, locking or slipping or you experience a loss of balance, which suggests a more worrisome issue. Do not ignore it. Try switching to exercises that work different muscle groups. If it continues, make an appointment with a sports doctor.

4.  You are out of water part way through a planned 60-minute-plus jog or speed walk. Should you turn around and go back?

Jogging in hot, humid weather without water is never a good idea. You should turn around and go get some water for your exercise.  The National Strength and Conditioning Association recommends drinking 16 ounces (2 cups) of a cool beverage 2 hours prior to exercising in a hot environment, and drinking six-to-eight ounces of fluid every 15 minutes during such workouts.

5.  You have only an hour in your schedule to exercise and you’re already a half-hour behind. Should you even bother?

A half-hour is better than not working out at all! Five half-hour workouts in a week are more beneficial than two sessions of an hour or more of exercising.

Crust-less Pumpkin Pie

Let’s be honest, for most of us, the best part of any meal is what comes afterward. Dessert. It’s no surprise that part can also be the most fattening and unhealthy for you – until now. With the 15-150 Secret to Simple Dieting book I co-wrote with Bobbie Freiberg, we teach you how to count what is going in and out of your body. Not only that, but you’ll lose weight just from doing that and all the food still tastes just as delicious as if it were made with fattening products. From the book, I’ve taken out one of my favorite recipes that won’t make you gain weight and only has one gram of fat! It’s so simple, it only consists of five ingredients that are easy to find at almost any super market location near you. Next time you are having a party or holiday gathering, definitely try this out for your guests! You can eat as much as you want and they’ll appreciate not having to feel so guilty going home with a full stomach!

Crust-less Pumpkin Pie
Ingredients
15 oz. canned pumpkin
½ cup egg whites or egg substitute
¾ cup sugar substitute
2 tbsp. ground cinnamon
2 tbsp. fat-free whipped cream

Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Place all ingredients except whipped cream in a bowl and mix well with a spoon. Spray baking pan with spray oil, and place mixture in pan. Bake for approximately 25 minutes. Once cooled, let sit in refrigerator for two hours. Top and serve with fat-free whipped cream and a little more sprinkled cinnamon.

Carbs: 8g

Eat Right During the Holiday

Holiday’s come with more than we can chew sometimes, with multiple dinner parties, drinks and desserts with loved ones. It seems that we enjoy an abundance of food from Thanksgiving all the way through the New Year where many of us make the Resolution to eat right, get fit and lose weight. It is funny how we go through the same motions year after year and can never seem to avoid weight gain and “shame” every holiday season. However the key to being healthy during the holiday isn’t necessarily starving ourselves at holiday meals; it is about controlling temptations of over-eating and regretting it in the days to come or under-eating and not enjoying the time with our family and friends because we are fearful of the fat that may come with the holiday. According to an article by California Pacific Medical Center some ways to enjoy the holiday meals without having any regrets is:

1. Be realistic and maintain your current weight
2. Plan time for exercise, it can help relieve the stress and pressures that come along with the holiday
3. Don’t skip meals; eat a light snack to curb your appetite so you don’t over indulge
4. Survey the buffet before you fill your plate; add plenty of veggies and your favorite foods
5. Eat until you are satisfied not stuffed, 6. Be careful with beverages, alcohol lowers inhibitions and induce over-eating yet non-alcoholic beverages are filled with calories and sugar
7. If you overeat at one meal go light on the next. It takes 500 calories per day (or 3,500 calories per week) above your normal/maintenance consumption to gain one pound. (It is impossible to gain weight from one piece of pie!)
8. Take the focus off food. Turn candy and cookie making time into non-edible projects like making wreaths, dough art decorations or a gingerbread house. Plan group activities with family and friends that isn’t all about food
9. Bring your own healthy dish to a holiday gathering
10. Practice Healthy Holiday Cooking by preparing favorite dishes lower in fat and calories will help promote healthy holiday eating.

If you follow simple steps like the ones listed above, you will have fewer regrets and more fun times with family and friends. Eating right this holiday season doesn’t mean giving up on or giving in to the food temptations that surround you. Be smart and be healthy and you will feel ten times better before, during, and after the meal and the holiday. Happy Holiday’s!

New Year’s Resolutions…Make Ones that You Can Actually Keep!

During the New Year we make all sorts of resolutions and promises to family and friends. However, many of us fall short in keeping the resolution and achieving the goals we set for ourselves. According to statisticbrain.com, the percent of people who are successful in achieving their resolution(s) is 8%, while the percent of people who absolutely never make their New Year’s resolution(s) is 38%. The numbers speak for themselves, that very few are able to stick out their resolutions and actually achieve their goal, while more of us fall into the absolutely never achieve our goal category.

The success to achieving your goals is twofold: one, make ‘SMART’ Goals and two, use professional help. A ‘SMART’ Goal is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Bound; also if you write down your goals they are more likely to be achieved. Flipping the Switch

In life negative thinking can keep us from accomplishing our goals, trying new things, and bettering ourselves. A negative thought process leads to doubts which turn into mental road blocks. Think back to any moment in your life in which negative thinking stopped you from trying something new, accomplishing a goal, or bettering yourself. Maybe you wanted to start exercising but quit because you felt embarrassed about how you looked or just simply got it in your head that it was too hard. Maybe you wanted to try something new like take a cooking, dance class, or try rocking climbing, but felt that you just were not good enough to do it. Maybe you tried bettering yourself by making an attempt at being more organized, tidier, and smiling more, but a low self-esteem kept all these positive things at bay.

If you can relate to any of the above thinking then hypnosis may be just the thing for you. You will find that hypnosis is the tool that will allow you to finally flip the switch and turn all those negative thoughts into positive ones , so the next time you find yourself in a position to try something new instead of saying I can’t you’ll say I can! Get Rid of Stress

Are feeling stressed out at work? Do find yourself bringing it home? Well now is the time to quit that bad habit before it gets worse. If you find that work is bringing you down then find ways that will help relieve the stress. Here are a few tips.

1. Make sure to recognize when you have stress the key to avoiding stress is to make sure you stop it before it can begin!
2. On way to get rid of stress is exercise! Exercise is a great way to get the endorphins going and burn calories while literally working the stress out of your body! You’ll feel healthier, and better if make sure to get your heart rate up for at least 30 minutes a day!
3. Find a hobby! Hobbies are great way to take your mind off of work! It’ll allow you to express yourself differently than your 9-5 will allow. By participating in something that interests you, you will find that will feel better about yourself and in turn relieve some stress!
4. Make sure that you have good time management and organizational skill. Make a to do list and don’t set unrealistic goals for yourself.
5. Take more breaks from your work. It may sound like a bad work ethic, but if you feel yourself stressing out, than get away from your desk for 5 minutes here and there!
